IHD:  ADULT/COMMUNITY EDUCATION

In keeping with the Kittery School Committee’s philosophy that learning should be a life-long process, the School Department will establish and maintain an educational program for adults.  This program shall provide, at convenient times and at reasonable costs, opportunities for residents of the community and surrounding areas to receive instruction in subjects commonly taught in the public schools and in such other fields as recommended by the Superintendent and approved by the School Committee.  Appropriate recognition certificates of attendance and satisfactory performance of work shall be issued upon completion of units and instruction.

Through its various programs and courses for adults, the adult education program shall seek to meet the needs of adults of all ages who, for whatever reason, have been unable to secure a high school diploma in a regular school program, who need additional training to acquire new skills or to become more proficient in their chosen occupations, or who would like to pursue interests relating to academic, vocational or leisure time activities.

In extenuating circumstances and in accordance with procedures approved by the School Committee, students who are 16 years of age or older up to age 20 and who are enrolled as day students at Traip Academy may receive credits toward a Traip Academy high school diploma through Kittery’s adult education program.
